Eight civilians shot dead within six hours in Jaffna

Between Saturday 6.00 pm and Sunday early morning 1.00 am eight civilians have been shot dead in Jaffna. Based on evidence provided by people in the neighbourhood all eight have been shot dead by Sri Lankan military. By Sunday morning, five of those shot dead have been identified by relatives.

On Saturday at 6.10 pm five people, including a woman, were shot dead near the Jaffna Fort inside Jaffna town. Two more people were shot dead in Atchchuveli west at 10.30 pm. Another person was killed in the early hours of Sunday in Punnalaikadduvan.

Five shot dead near Jaffna Fort

The five people killed near Jaffna Fort on Saturday at 6.10 pm, were caught in the cordon and search operation carried out by the SLA in which the SLA opened fire. The bodies of the five dead people were handed over to the Jaffna teaching hospital. All five bodies have marks resulting from severe beating. There were several marks on their faces too. Although the SLA statement said that the five people they shot dead were members of the LTTE, relatives have identified two of the dead.

One of those identified is Krishnan Nimaleswaran (31), an employee of Jaffna Central College, where he worked as the night security guard. His mother, S Sellamah, identified her son’s body. She says, “My son usually leaves for work at 5.00 pm and returns at 8.30 am. On Sunday morning he did not return home as usual”. She also said that her family depended on her son’s earning as a security guard.

The name of the other man was identified by his wife as that of Balasingam Chandrakanthan (24). He is from the village Manipay and he married recently and was living in Velanai. He worked in a motorbike repair garage in Koddady near Jaffna town.

The bodies of the other three people shot dead near Jaffna Fort have not been identified.

Atchchuveli murders

Two men from Atchchuveli, Mohan Ravi (48), father of eight children, and Marian Vijayaraja (25), father of one child, were shot and killed when they were walking from a function at a relative’s home.

On their way home, they stepped behind some bushes to relieve themselves. SLA who were hiding behind the bushes opened fire at them around 10.30 pm. People in the neighbourhood heard the gun shots and found the bodies of the two men with several gun shot wounds the following morning.

Judge Ms Sarojini Ilankovan, went to the site and examined the scene. She then ordered the bodies to be taken to the Jaffna teaching hospital for examination.

Man shot dead in Punnalaikadduvan

The body of Ariaratnam Kanagarsa (58), father of five children, was found near the Eevinai Narasingha Vairavar temple with knife cuts on Sunday morning.

Ariyaratnam Kanagarasa worked in a bakery. He left on the bicycle for work on the early hours of Sunday. His body was discovered the next morning.

People in the neighbourhood where the body was found said that they heard gun shots around 1.00 am on Sunday morning followed by someone’s cry for help.

Judge Mr Sarojini Ilankovan went to the site and ordered the body to be taken to Jaffna teaching hospital.
